For the most part, things will still work as you are used to. However, there are two very important differences you need to know about:
Ready to get on the road now? Sure you can! The Starland Celerity is designed to provide a grand driving experience for both beginning and advanced drivers. Below is a quick start guide for first time use to let you get started right away.
Before getting in your car, you should attach the drivers HUD that has been included in your package. Named something similar to “SDG HUD 2X.XX” (varies based on current version number). Just right click and select “Add”. It will attach to the lower center of your screen.
NOTE: The Generation 1 and Generation 2 HUDs are not interchangeable. While some features may work, most will not. Generation 2 cars and accessories all will have a version number greater than 20.00.
Make sure you are in an area where you have rezzing rights and where scripts are enabled and drop your car on the ground. As delivered the car is placed at <0,0,0> rotation. You may want to spin it to a more likable direction. Once rezzed, wait for the configuration message. When you see this message:
4HI Engine Loaded
your car is ready to use. Do not sit on the car until you see that message in Nearby Chat.
Keystroke | Function |
---|---|
PageUp or E | Shift to higher gear |
PageDown or C | Shift to lower gear |
Up arrow or W | Accelerator |
Down Arrow or S | Brake |
Left Arrow or A | Turn Left |
Right Arrow or D | Turn Right |
Accelerator/Brake model: While some mostly older cars in SL use the up arrow for forward and down arrow for reverse, Starland, like most newer cars, use the Up arrow as an accelerator and Down arrow as brake. When in reverse you still must use the Up arrow to “put on the gas”.
To start moving, click PageUp once to shift to first gear, then push and hold the up arrow to start moving forward and left/right to steer. To increase speed, shift to higher gears.
Notes: It is not recommended to be in higher than 4th gear when driving on mainland and passing through region crossings. Gears 5-7 are best used on single region racetracks.
Most of the basic driving features you will need are controlled by the HUD. Lights, turn signals, horn, and windows can be controlled here. The hud also provides basic operations information including current gear, cruise control status, current speed, fuel level, and direction of travel.
For mouselook drivers, frequently used functions can be accessed using the left mouse button while in mouselook mode.
1. Ignition switch starts/stops car.
2. Face of mirror brings up car menu.
3. STARLAND decal on steering wheel sounds the car horn.
4. Switch panel on center console selects driving mode: 4LO, 4HI and 2WD.
5. Buttons on left side of GPS screen control headlights, hi/lo beam, floodlights and foglights.
Once you are done driving your car, you may want to take the car you have just driven back into inventory for use during your next session. The reason for this is that some settings are maintained inside the car and will be lost if you rez a new version of the car from your inventory.
Specifically, the following information is kept inside the vehicle’s memory:
While this will result in a bit of proliferation of past used cars, it is the only way to maintain the above information, as SL does not provide any other method for retaining this information.
Now that you have buzzed around and gotten the basics of driving down, its time to get into the inner workings of your Starland Celerity. There are three different paths for control of your car’s extended features.
The Starland Driver HUD (object name SDG HDG 21.0) gives you on-screen push button control of your car, along with some visual information about the car's settings, speed mileage and fuel level. It is recommended to always wear this HUD when using the car. Though not required, it does make the driving experience much easier. Most of the controls you need quick access to while driving are on the HUD. Starland HUDs are designed to use with multiple cars. Some features, like rear windows and sunroof, do not apply to the Celerity. Full instructions on the use of the HUD are located at Starland Driver HUD.
The car menu is accessible from the HUD or by clicking on the roof/spoiler while in arcade mode (camera view behind car) or on the glass part of the internal mirror while in mouselook mode. This is where you perform some general settings for the car such as seat adjustments, general performance settings, and others.
The car menu primarily controls options settings such as engine type and adjustments that are not needed immediately when driving the car. Most of these settings are part of the REC engine that is the baseline script set used by Starland Motors. The car menu functions you might need while driving have been replaced by gestures, commands, and the drivers HUD.
MODE: Mode button is what you might think of in the real world as a transfer case. This selects the three different drive modes:
Options and Adjustments allow you to perform temporary seat adjustments, reboot the car’s “computer” and list the current settings. Most of the changes made in Options and Adjustments do not survive a script reset. These buttons are meant for quick testing of settings. To make them permanent the resulting values after making the changes need to be pasted into the appropriate lines in the configuration script, which has been provided modifiable so you can customize your car functions to your liking.
Lock/Unlock lets you temporarily unlock your car to allow someone other than you drive it. This is a switch so it reflects the state you wish to switch to if you click on it.
SDG HUD 21.0 gives the HUD to the seated driver which may or may not be the owner. You must be seated on the car to receive the hud. Once you receive it, Select the Car menu, Addons - Resync to tell the car to synchronize with the HUD. If you wear the HUD before sitting, it will connect to the HUD automatically.
Burnout triggers the car's burnout mode and causes the rear wheels to spin and smoke for a short time.
Neutral/Park switches physical mode on and off when the car is not started. With physical mode on, the car can be pushed or towed.
Addons brings up a submenu of additional features that Starland has added to the Celerity.
Unflip returns the car to upright position if it flips over.
Transmission switches between manual and automatic transmissions and sets timing for shifting when automatic is chosen.
Resync tells the car to connect with the HUD if you attached it after sitting.
Fuel Control temporarily enables or disables the GFS fuel system. Also from here you can ask the car to show the current fuel levels.
Set Miles lets you change the recorded mileage on your odometer. This is intended as a backup should you lose your vehicle and have to rez a new one, or after updating to a new version.
License allows you to either reset the license number, or enter a personalized plate number. It also has option to change the background of the license plate.
Changes made to Transmission, Top and Fuel control do NOT survive a reboot of the car. To make these changes permenant, you must change the default setting in the configuration script and take the car back into inventory.
